Procedure!

1. Take the temperatures of the areas.
2. Cut three pieces of string and tie them around each pencil.
3. Add tablespoons of borax until it doesn't dissolve any more in the cups- be sure there is 3/4 of the cups filled with water first.
4. Lay the pencils over the cups/jars with the strings in the water.
5. Cover the jars with plastic wrap, wax paper, or aluminum foil.
6. Place 1 of each cup in the 3 areas.
7. Leave the jars alone for 5 days (gives the crystals time) and do not disturb them!
8. After the 5 days are over, remove the pencils and observe. If you are doing this for school, record your observations.
9. If entering a science fair, take pictures of the stalks.
10. repeat steps 1-9 if you want for more accurate results.
